BlackBerry PlayBook OS gets an update, however it’s too late

Research in Motion declared on Tuesday the release of an update to its BlackBerry PlayBook OS, at last fetching the native email client to their 7’’ slate after almost a year on the marketplace. Through the blog posting, Research in Motion’s senior vice-president of mobile computing, David J. Smith, stated that the attributes that he is most thrilled in this update are integrated e-mail, contacts calendar. The email client comes with a combined inbox, so some ease of use is granted to consumers. Sadly, the tablet PC from the BlackBerry PlayBook even now has no access to BBM, which is the Research in Motion’s IM service.

Research in Motion has upgraded its BlackBerry Bridge software, which allows the tablet computer to connect with the handsets from the Canadian mobile phone manufacturer. This facility permits users to transform their smartphones into the remotes’’ for the PlayBook, and fascinatingly these remote capabilities work with several other gizmos outside the BlackBerry ecosystem, such as the Sony PS3 and a host of other Android-running tablets like the Motorola Xoom – which are supporting the Bluetooth HID profile.

The Canadian telecommunication giant also launched a plethora of apps that were earlier exclusive to the Android marketplace, so here also the breeze of change is clearly visible. However, technology bloggers like us are the least surprised with this announcement, as we were discussing this update for months now. The new update is great news for the handful of PlayBook users however we still wonder why it took one year for the Canadian mogul to release the update.

One more thing to consider is that this upgrade is only helpful for the exiting owners of the tablet computer, and won’t attract new buyers as the iPad 3 release date is merely a few weeks away.
